Ingredients

Apple Strudel ingredients
  • Apples - my family loves to use Granny smith apples or Envy apples.
  • Phyllo dough - this thin and light pastry is perfect for wrapping the apples
  • Cinnamon & Nutmeg - the best fall flavors

See the recipe card below for quantities and measurements.

Variations

Want to spice up the apple strudel? Try these simple add-ins:

  • Caramel Sauce - If desired dip the baked apple strudel slices in.
  • Nuts - Want to add some crunch? Add in your favorite type of finely chopped nuts after baking.

Equipment

Equipment can have a big impact on how a recipe turns out. I recommend using:

  • Apple corer
  • Pizza slicer
  • Knife
  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowls
  • Pastry brush

Instructions

***Make sure to thaw your phyllo dough sheets before beginning this recipe. Follow the thawing instructions on the box***

Sliced and cored apples with sugar
  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice apples horizontally into ¼ inch slices. Using a cap, push out the core. (if you do not have an apple corer) In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Melt butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Set aside.

2. Remove the phyllo dough sheets from the wrapping and place two sheets on your working surface. Brush on melted butter and layer another two sheets on top. Brush the top sheets with melted butter. You will have 4 phyllo sheets in total.

3. Using a pizza cutter or a knife, cut the sheet lengthwise into ¼ - ½ inch strips. Carefully separate the strips. Pick up an apple slice and carefully wrap the strip around and slice and through the center. Each apple slice will use two strips.

4. Once all apple slices are wrapped, place them in the oven for 15-18 minutes. The tops and the bottoms of each slice should be browned and flaky. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture on top and enjoy!

Hint: Spooning in the dry ingredients will help ensure the batter comes out smooth.

Storage

Since there is so much moisture in the apples and the dough, these do not keep for more than 1-2 days. I would store them in an air-tight container on your countertop.

Top Tip

It is okay if your strips slightly rip while wrapping them around the apples. Keep going! Just press them down and keep wrapping.

FAQ

Can I use puff pastry for this recipe?

While I love puff pastry, for this recipe I would only use the phyllo dough. It is best for wrapping the apples, and it gets really crispy in the oven.

It’s okay if the strips rip slightly, just press them down and keep wrapping!
  • Once all apple slices are wrapped, place them in the oven for 15-18 minutes. The tops and the bottoms of each slice should be browned and flaky. Remove from the oven, sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture on top and, enjoy!

Notes

  • I like to use granny smith apples for this recipe.
  • If you want to make more strudels, you can double the recipe.
